I just wanted to mention that simple ribbed socks are my favorite things to take along anywhere, such as knit gatherings, I can work on them without looking most of the time. Stick to that and you'll always be a sock knitter Kate! ;o) Additionally, I never pull out stitchless needles anymore, since I wrap my yarn this way: see pic at http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2275/1798684627_5bdc10caa2.jpg

Now that's a great way to keep them from sliding out! Do you knit Magic Loop?
As to where to place your increases, that is up to you and the pattern you're trying to create. Placing increases & decreases in a row of knitting will if repeated over enough rows; cause the knitting to slope into the direction of the decreases. I hope this helps; it's hard to be specific without seeing more of the pattern.
